ModelReins Companion
Thanks for trying it.
Your download is starting in a moment. While it does, here's what you're about to install and what to expect on first run — so the Windows warning doesn't spook you.
ModelReins-Companion-Setup-4.5.2.exe · stable channel · v4.5.2
or via npm:
npm install -g modelreins-worker
What this installs
- The Director. A small local model that classifies your prompts and routes them to the right worker on the Rail. Resolves ~95% of dispatches without the cloud.
- A worker on the Patch. Earns its keep when your machine is idle. Joins the fleet and takes jobs from the Rail.
- The Wall. Ambient mission control. Sits in the tray. Takes the screen when you step away.
First-run expectations
- Setup wizard pops in 5 seconds. It detects what AI tools you already have (Ollama, LM Studio, Claude Code, Codex, Aider) and confirms what it found. You don't pick from a list — we only show what's actually there.
- Free local mode is the default. No account, no API key, no internet required. Optional Pro pairing if you have multiple machines you want synced.
- The wizard runs a live classification test. You'll see the Director make a real routing decision on the Rail in ~3 seconds before you finish setup.
⚠ Heads-up about Windows SmartScreen. The installer is unsigned for now (code signing is on the post-launch list). Windows will show "Windows protected your PC." Click More info → Run anyway. This is normal for indie installers and will go away once we sign.
Saddle up next
Once the companion is installed and the wizard is done, install the ModelReins VSCode extension — the saddle. It finds the Director over the loopback bus, puts you on the Rail, and gives you one-keystroke dispatch from any editor pane. Ctrl+Shift+M opens it.

One dude and a dream. Built honestly, shipped on time.
